Social & Community Service

My name is Keona, and I came to WorkBC after being unemployed for over one year. During this time, I suffered abuse and lost contact with my parents resulting in symptoms of anxiety and depression. I had low self-esteem, felt very uncomfortable around people, and couldn’t go a day without crying. I felt very lost and unsure of where to seek employment.

My friend told me about WorkBC Employment Services. It was a huge step outside my comfort zone, I’m glad I took it. It was a decision that has only proven to be beneficial and encouraging. Today, after seeking employment help from WorkBC, I have a newfound purpose and confidence. I feel much more prepared to re-enter the workforce.

My employment counselor at WorkBC Centre Surrey-Newton, referred me to an employment program for survivors of abuse at SOURCES Community Resource Society. There I learned about communication, self-care, informational interviews, resume formatting and much more. As well, my employer liaison at SOURCES helped me participate in a three-week practicum at Mental Health Clubhouse. After this work experience, I was able to continue as a volunteer. Completion of this program was followed by a WorkBC recommendation to apply for a Social & Community Service Certificate.

The staff at WorkBC Centre not only helped me with my career goal, but also provided me with different types of financial support that I needed at that time. The most important was the personal counselling support; these were paid sessions through WorkBC to overcome the trauma and stress I was dealing with for a long time.

Prior to visiting WorkBC, I only had experience as a general labourer and restaurant server. Now, I am attending the Social & Community Service Certificate course which is funded by WorkBC. This will give me the qualifications to work in an organization that supports people struggling with mental health concerns.

Gaining this certificate would not have been possible without the help from WorkBC. As a youth, my journey of finding suitable schooling and fulfilling employment has been challenging, however with professional and personal guidance and support, I am a new person!
