Turning Compassion into a Career

Before going to WorkBC Centre Newton I was working as a home care support worker. I have always had a passion to work with seniors one on one, but I needed formal education in order to find work in that field. I did not have any of the required education or certification to work as a community support worker and was not financially available to afford the education either.

When I learned about WorkBC Centre Newton and came by to explore my options to support my job search. I was hopping to find a job that could help me pay my expenses and have a steady job.

I was then given the opportunity to attend training to become a community support worker which would allow me to work with seniors and people with disability. This training helped me learn about theories and concepts about being a community support worker. During my training, WorkBC Centre Newton supported me financially with Basic living support, so I could concentrate on my learning.

After my training I was given the opportunity gain hands on experience through a practicum! The practicum host recognized my compassion and strong work ethic and offered me a full-time position as a Community Support worker, where I can work with and support people with disabilities.

I am very grateful for the time my Employment Counsellor spent listening to me which allowed me to attend a course and further my career options.

I am now a certified Community Support worker, and with all the education and opportunities I have now earned, built my confidence and self-esteem!
