Achieving my dreams and fulfilling my needs - Gurjeet

Since I arrived in the country, I had been very confused about my career path. For three years, I searched for a full-time career with growth opportunities, preferably related to children, because back home, I was a computer teacher. However, when I first came here, I didn’t have valid teaching credentials or any teaching experience in Canada, so I was only able to work in the computer field. Even though my previous career was good for freelancing opportunities and I had valuable experience in graphic design and administration, it was still very difficult to find a sustainable job and the right path, especially since I have a son who is on the mild end of the autism spectrum. Because of this, I was really motivated to learn more about working with children.
With some background in psychology, I became interested in supporting children who needed help, but I felt uncertain about where to go or how to choose a career that would allow me to support my own child as well as others, while also returning to teaching.
One day, my sister suggested that I contact WorkBC for guidance. She assured me that they would help me achieve my goal of becoming a teacher, considering my unique needs and challenges:
First, I was looking for a 9-to-5 job near my home area, but it was hard to find. I only received offers for part-time work, typically 2 or 3 days a week, with inconsistent hours, and all of them were far away. Second, I was looking for a well-paying job. However, the biggest challenge was that my children are still young, and I couldn’t leave them alone. Additionally, my son with special needs has classes at home, so I needed to be present according to his schedule.
When I reached out to WorkBC Centre Newton, they created an account for me, and I was assigned to a case manager. She was very supportive, patiently listening to my concerns. She also recommended that I attend a skills training workshop, which I did for three days. After completing the workshop, I gained a clear understanding of where I stood and gained confidence about the field I should pursue. My case manager then introduced me to the Early Childhood Education (ECE) program, which provided a clear pathway into the teaching field.
I couldn’t be more happy and grateful to have followed my sister’s advice. Sometimes, the field you think is right for you may not be the one that suits you in the future. At other times, life leads you down a different path, and there are many ways to find inner strength along the way.
At WorkBC Centre Newton, they truly listen to you, understand what you're looking for, and guide you in making the best decision for your future. They assist in crafting a better resume and cover letter, and they provide job-start support. Thanks to them, I received a job offer from a daycare center in Surrey, and it's right near my house! I never imagined finding the right career for myself, and I am so thankful for their help.
WorkBC really helps make your dreams come true!
Best wishes,
Gurjeet
