Finding Strength and Sustainability in a New Land

After recently immigrating to Canada and being a survivor of violence, it was difficult to get a response from my job search efforts. It felt like I lacked Canadian experience and was unable to follow the local job market. For 6 months I was unemployed and struggling financially, with unstable housing, and language barriers.

When I learned about WorkBC, I was living at a shelter where a staff-member told me about them. After that, I went to WorkBC Centre Newton to find support while on my journey.

My case manager took the time to listen to my background and current job goal. We went through the job requirements for my goal and what I needed to complete to achieve it. They also provided me with useful resume suggestions and some job search strategies to better navigate the market.

When I attended a workshop at WorkBC Centre Newton, I learned useful job search and networking skills. My case manager also helped me receive my Foodsafe and First Aid certification which brought me closer to my goal. I was also referred to a local foodbank so I could meet my basic needs.

Thanks to WorkBC Centre Newton, I am now employed as a casual worker at a not-for-profit organization that provides me with a sustainable hourly rate.

My experience with WorkBC Centre Newton has been supportive and informative. The staff provided guidance, resources, and encouragement that helped me understand employment opportunities and build confidence in my job search.

Success to me today means stability, growth, and hope. It also means taking steps forward despite the challenges, learning new skills, and building a safe and meaningful future for myself and my child. Success is having the courage to keep going, using my voice to create positive change, and to celebrate progress—no matter how small—along the way.
