One Decision: A Brighter Future

Before moving to Canada from Ghana, I was a stay-at-home mother, caring for my two young children. In this new country and with my children a bit older, I was ready to start working. As a newcomer to Canada and someone who had been out of the workforce for some time, I wasn’t sure where to begin my job search and faced several challenges.
For almost a year, I was unsure and unsuccessful in securing a position. Thankfully, that changed after a friend introduced me to WorkBC. I decided to give it a try, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made.
At the WorkBC Centre Newton, I met my amazing case manager who played a key role in helping me find employment. Meeting with her relieved a lot of the stress I was feeling about my employment journey. With her guidance, I stayed focused and determined, and through the Wage Subsidy Program, I was matched with a great job opportunity.
Today, I’m proud to say that I’m employed at a café. Alongside that, I’ve also started working part-time as a Health Care Assistant, which is something I’m passionate about. Being able to contribute to my family’s well-being and grow professionally has been truly empowering.
WorkBC didn’t just help me find a job, they supported me every step of the way. I received job start support after I was offered the job. The job start support included help with transportation and work clothing, which allowed me to focus on securing employment and gave me a strong start for in my new job.
What made my experience with the WorkBC Centre Newton so special was the mentorship and encouragement I received. It was both awesome and amazing to work with people who genuinely cared about my success. With their guidance, I now have a career, confidence, and a bright future for myself and my children.
Thank you to WorkBC! I encourage others who feel unsure about their employment future to reach out. My advice to others is to be focused and determined. In life, you can achieve your dreams!
