Transforming My Frustration into Goal Achievement - Jennifer

Graduation Woman

As a newcomer to Canada, I faced many obstacles in finding a job. Although I had worked in my home country, I didn’t have any educational or work experience in Canada, which made it difficult to find employment. Despite my best efforts, sending out countless resumes to employers, I received no responses or interview opportunities, which was both frustrating and disheartening. This situation not only affected me but also created many challenges for my family, as my husband often had to seek new employment due to his project-based work, making our lives difficult.

While discussing my employment challenges with a friend, they suggested I visit WorkBC, as they provided support and learning opportunities for newcomers looking for jobs. Though I had never heard of WorkBC before, I decided to give their services a chance. I must confess that The WorkBC Centre Newton Team exceeded my expectations by providing personalized assistance to help me achieve my employment goals.

My case manager supported me every step of the way. Together, we worked to identify job opportunities that I enjoyed and that matched my skills. Once I identified my desired field of employment, they helped me apply to schools, which ultimately led to my acceptance into the Academy of Learning Career College. While going back to school was not easy, my case manager was always there to offer support. They checked in with me weekly and were always patient in answering any questions I had. Their guidance gave me the confidence I needed to finish my program.

After eight months of hard work and study, I proudly graduated with my diploma. The amazing team also helped me create a strong resume and cover letter that reflected my interests and past experience. Thanks to their continued support, I was able to secure a full-time job in May of 2024.

As I reflect on my employment journey, I am incredibly grateful for all the help provided by the WorkBC Centre Newton Team. Through their support, I was able to build educational experience and find a career that now allows me to support my family. I will always be profoundly appreciative of this experience.
